Please help me decide which of the two bikes are a better value for
recreational XC; I weight 170lb; I can get either bike for $599:

Ride 'em both and pick the one that "feels" better.

(If they really feel the same, then pick the one that LOOKS better.)

Both specs seems to be similar. Personally, from a quick glance I like
Kona's setup more. But then my opinion is irrevelant because I'll not
be the one riding the bike. Pick one that you feel most comfortable
with when riding it.

You really should read up on Fisher's Genesis frame geometry, because
components don't mean much unless your body likes how it is situated on
the bike. If you can test ride both bikes, do it!
