I've got a stock Specialized Hardrock 2004 bike and went out for a
spin in the forest last night after a couple of days of heavy rain and
came off twice having lost the front wheel completely (once when
turning on wet greasy cobbles and once when I was turning on the mud
and went over a branch). Anyway, I know the stock tyres my bike came
with are not the best in the world and was wondering if anyone knows
what I should look for to replace them. Also, should I be changing my
cycling position in wet conditions ?

You don't say WHAT the stock tires are (I hated Specialized Team Control
tires back in the day, in case they're Special Ed brand tires); grab some
Mythos XC or Fire XC Pros on sale (LBS or mail order).

In wet conditions you should be more cautious (brilliant, eh?); EXPECT to
slip and be ready.
