Ok here is the thing, and i'm sure many of you are sick of people
asking this. I'm setting my budget around 500. I have absolutely no
idea what i'm looking for. I use to ride a little bit when I was
younger. So I was just wondering if anyone could help me out with
buying a new bike or used bike and how I would go about doing that.
From what I've read I want a front end bike. Any response would help.
thanks.

I would save some more money. If you are going off road a lot, dual
supension is one nice way to go. I love that one personally. You will need
around 1k +++ for that guy. Test ride a lot of bikes. Go to a quality shops
and see what size they tell you is correct. Then go to another and see if
you are getting the same scoop. Shop, shop..shop.. The shopping is
actually a lot of fun. Pedals that clip you in are great. Of course then
you need the shoes for that one. Research equiptment and read reviews at
Mountain Bike Mag.
Take your time.. you will be stuck with it for a while. Good luck.. I ride
a Yetti..

Nonsense. $1k is not an insignificant amount of money. The OP said he has
$500 to spend, so the obvious thing is to giude him to a valid $500
purchase.

To the OP:
Go to a bike shop. Go to several. Lay out your budget. Stay away from full
bounceers at that price.
Brand, within that price range, does not matter. Specialized, Trek,
whatever...all similar quality components at a similar price point.

Bring home the bike you like the best, from the shop you like the best.

Next year, when you *know* what you like and don't like....then lay out more
bucks for a better bike. Keep this one for a spare/loaner.

Actually 500$ this year and another new bike next year sounds like about 1k
or more anyway you figure it. Research and get a nice one to start with and
you won't need a new one next year.

And without actual riding experience, all the 'research' in the world may
still have him on the wrong bike.

If his budget is $500, so be it. Telling him to spend $1000 is worse than
useless, especially for a *first* bike.
